Since its establishment by Eliza Hall in 1912 with a donation of £1,000,000, The Walter & Eliza Hall Trust has been helping Australians in need. During that time many thousands of Australians and their families suffering the effects of poverty have been assisted in surviving a crisis. Many others have been helped to reach their full potential.

In addition, many organisations have benefited, one notable example being the Walter & Eliza Hall Institute for Medical Research which was established in 1915 with assistance from the Trust.

In response to the growing demand for assistance from families and individuals, the Trustees set up The Walter & Eliza Hall Supplementary Trust in 1986. Since then this supplementary trust has been, and continues to be, supported regularly by a small number of very generous benefactors, including The Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation and The Hudson-Lennox Fund. However, with the continuing growth in the number of people seeking our assistance and the rising level of assistance required in individual cases, it is now necessary to embark upon a wider fundraising campaign.

A recent initiative, The Survival Fund is the banner under which we seek to attract donations directly from the general community to help us meet the growing demands for our assistance.

The full amount of every donation is passed on to our beneficiaries. Costs are kept to an absolute minimum in this organisation, and consequently there are currently no administration expenses levied against donations.
